The Death By Karaoke
Experiment
Once upon a time there was an independent label called
Omega Point Records that specialized in releasing CDs by
bands who mixed electronic music with an indie/punk approach
to songwriting and performance. In four short years, Omega
Point released 30+ albums by groups like Ming & Ping,
Zom Zoms, Avenpitch, and the Mystechs, among others. It
was a lot of fun, and the bands had a blast recording and
touring together, but all parties must end. Some of the
bands broke up, others signed with bigger labels, meanwhile
the iPod and music blogs came around and everyone stopped
buying CDs and reading magazines, so it seemed a bit silly
for OPR to carry on as a "record label" in the
traditional sense.
Thus began the Death By Karaoke experiment. While,
for the moment, DBK continues to operate like a typical
independent label, work is underway to transform the DBK
website into a space where bands with a common style can
connect with fans who share their tastes... Imagine if
MySpace was pickier about which bands were allowed to create
music pages, and fans of those bands could find plenty
of other music they like just by browsing the site.
Is it going to work? Can't say. But check back soon, for
updates on when the finished site will be rolling out.
